Sheldon S04e17 720p: Young
This isn't the usual "my professor is mean" complaint. This is existential. Sheldon begins sleepwalking, mumbling equations, and losing his appetite. In a heartbreaking scene, he tells Meemaw (Annie Potts) that he feels like a fraud. Armitage delivers this line with a vulnerability that reminds us that despite his 170+ IQ, he is still just a nine-year-old boy terrified of not being special. While Sheldon is spiraling in the world of theoretical physics, Mary (Zoe Perry) is dealing with a more terrestrial crisis. After a prayer group meeting, she is approached by Pastor Rob (Dan Byrd), the cool, progressive youth pastor who has been a recurring presence this season.
In the pantheon of Young Sheldon episodes, some focus on laugh-out-loud nerd culture clashes, while others sneak up on you with emotional gut-punches. Season 4, Episode 17, which originally aired in April 2021, is one of the latter. Titled simply “A Black Hole,” the episode masterfully balances Sheldon’s academic anxieties with a surprisingly tender subplot for his mother, Mary. The cold open sets the tone immediately. Sheldon (Iain Armitage) announces to the family that his "perfect" brain has encountered an anomaly: a scientific problem he cannot solve. The issue? String theory. More specifically, the mathematics behind a black hole’s singularity have stumped the young prodigy. For the first time in his life, Sheldon feels a failure. young sheldon s04e17 720p
Pastor Rob reveals that the church board is considering firing him due to his "unorthodox" methods (guitars, jeans, talking about feelings). Mary, feeling a sense of purpose, decides to fight for him. This leads to a delightful "cloak and dagger" subplot where Mary sneaks around the church, collecting signatures to save Rob’s job without her husband George (Lance Barber) finding out—because George can't stand Rob.
