He typed the final line of BASIC. The BD5's fan whirred, coughed, then steadied. The green cursor flashed—and then typed something back.

"It's not dead," Sheldon breathed. "It's dormant. And if I can bypass its 8-bit I/O controller, I might be able to make it run advanced probability models."

"You can't be serious," he whispered, awe replacing his usual disdain. He typed the final line of BASIC

He ran downstairs. "Mom! I've discovered a new interpretation of particle scattering!"

The family grew concerned. Mary found him at 2 a.m., muttering hex codes. Meemaw asked, "Is that thing gonna blow up?" Sheldon didn't answer. He was close. "It's not dead," Sheldon breathed
