“You look like a constipated chipmunk,” she said.

“You must be Sheldon,” the boy said. “I’m Jeremy. My dad says you’re the smartest kid in Medford. I’m here to prove him wrong.”

While George haggled (poorly), Sheldon wandered to a glass case filled with dusty watches, dented trumpets, and a row of calculators that dated back to the Carter administration. Then he saw it. A 1972 Hewlett-Packard HP-35. The first handheld scientific calculator. It was a legend. It was beautiful. It had a red LED display and a price tag that read: $150. young sheldon s01e05 webrip

Sheldon Lee Cooper, age nine, sat at the breakfast table, dissecting a waffle into perfect geometric quadrants. His mother, Mary, was packing his twin sister Missy’s lunch. His brother, Georgie, was trying to sneak an extra sausage. And his father, George, was staring into his coffee as if it held the secrets to a less chaotic universe.

Mary grounded him from his calculus books for a week. Sheldon looked as if she had just sentenced him to live in a world without prime numbers. “You look like a constipated chipmunk,” she said

Later that night, Meemaw (Connie) stopped by with a plate of cookies and a radar for family dysfunction. She found Sheldon sitting in the dark, staring at the wall.

An hour later, Meemaw and Sheldon stood in Stan’s Pawn & Loan. Stan looked up from his shotgun cleaning. “Closed.” My dad says you’re the smartest kid in Medford

“I can’t. He’s… adequate.”
