The screen flickered. Not a crash, not a blue screen—a flicker , like an old CRT television changing channels. Then her desktop returned, but the wallpaper was wrong. It was a screenshot of an achievement pop-up from a game she’d never played: Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood . The achievement was called — “Complete the Da Vinci disappearance.”
At 34%, a second file appeared: memory_fragment_002.log . SESSION: March 14, 2013. USER: Aiden Pearce. ACHIEVEMENT UNLOCKED: “System Mangler” – Breach all ctOS towers. Anomaly: User reported seeing their own reflection in a security camera, blinking when they weren’t. Achievement retroactively linked to unused “Profile Visualization” asset. Claire’s phone buzzed. The Uplay window turned solid black. Then white text appeared, one line at a time: It was a screenshot of an achievement pop-up
Weirder still, a new window opened. It looked like Uplay’s old interface, the one from a decade ago. A progress bar filled slowly:
Claire frowned. She didn’t work on any Uplay-integrated titles. She didn’t even have Uplay installed on her work machine—or so she thought. A quick check of her Program Files revealed a folder she’d never noticed: C:\Program Files (x86)\Ubisoft\Uplay\deep_storage . Inside was a single executable named ach_get.exe , timestamped from three years ago—the day she’d started at the company.
