Mario landed, but his controls felt heavy . His shadow stretched the wrong way, pointing toward the castle doors. The music was there, but it was backwards—a dirge of familiar notes played in reverse. Leo pressed forward.

He jumped into the first painting—Bob-omb Battlefield. But the mountain was upside down, its peak buried in the sky. The Bob-ombs weren’t black. They were white, with single, red-veined eyes. They didn’t explode. They just stared and whispered Mario’s controller inputs aloud.
