Melody Marks Schoolgirl May 2026

Mr. Hanley was discussing Jane Eyre , his voice droning on about passion versus restraint. Melody had read the novel three times. She knew every word of Jane’s fierce speech to Rochester. And as Mr. Hanley asked, “What does Jane mean when she says, ‘I am no bird; and no net ensnares me’?”

But today, during fourth-period English, something cracked.

Mr. Hanley blinked. “Yes… Miss Marks?”

Melody closed the notebook. “I think I’m becoming someone new.”

Her mother smiled, a tired, familiar smile. “Always prepared.”

The room held its breath. Melody’s cheeks flushed crimson. She had never spoken so boldly. Mr. Hanley’s mouth opened, then closed. Finally, he nodded.

“It means,” she said, her voice trembling but clear, “that a cage is still a cage, even if it’s gilded. Even if it has a desk and a uniform and a perfect GPA. She’s saying that freedom is not a privilege. It’s a birthright.”
