The most effective popular media weaves its impact subtly into compelling narratives. Black Panther worked not because it was a lecture on Afrofuturism, but because it was a thrilling superhero film that happened to be set in a technologically advanced, un-colonized Africa. Barbie was able to dissect patriarchy and existential dread because it was first a hilarious, pink-infused comedy.
