Lara ripped the headphones off. Her hands were shaking. She looked at the case file on her desk: Marco Polidori, 39. Cause of death: blunt-force trauma consistent with a cylindrical object. The thermometer. But his face… the coroner’s report noted the victim’s expression: “frozen in a rictus of shock, mouth open, as if mid-sentence.”

Ramsay’s voice softened to a terrifying calm. “Marco. Your lamb was bloody perfection. Your scallops? Seared on one side, raw on the soul. But that’s not why you’re going home. You’re going home because you remembered . You saw the red door in the dry storage, didn’t you? You saw the pit.”

And then, her desk phone rang. Caller ID: . The line was dead, but after three seconds of silence, a slow, clapping rhythm started. And a voice, familiar from her TV as a teenager, whispered: “Welcome to the final dinner service, Detective

For Detective Lara Moss, it was just another piece of digital evidence pulled from a dead man’s iPod Classic. The victim, a former reality TV chef named Marco Polidori, had been found in his SoHo walk-up, a high-end meat thermometer lodged in his chest.
