The article is a critical essay analyzing the essence of Mihai Eminescu’s poetry. Călinescu uses the metaphor of the “golden bough” (from Virgil’s Aeneid —the mystical branch that allows Aeneas to enter the underworld) to argue that Eminescu’s genius lies in his ability to express the fundamental, melancholic longing of the Romanian soul .
