But in the morning, the servants found Serefin’s violin in the middle of the Rotunda, playing a single chord on its own. And on the floor, in fresh wax drippings from the melted cylinders, someone—or something—had written: The echo began to loop

He lifted his bow. The first note he played was Klara’s voice—soft, questioning, as if she were calling from a distant room. Then the note split.
