Adobe Illustrator-versionshistorie May 2026

Jumping from “88” to 3.0 (skipping 2.0 to align with internal versioning), this release introduced PostScript color fills and gradients. More critically, it added TrueType font support (alongside PostScript Type 1). The interface gained a proper layer palette, though each layer was a blunt object—no sublayers. This version was ported to NeXTSTEP and Silicon Graphics workstations, foreshadowing cross-platform ambitions. Phase 2: The Platform Wars & FreeHand’s Shadow (1992–1998)

The first version to support Adobe Plug-ins (third-party filters). Added CMYK preview on screen (via Photoshop-like soft proofing). Bundled with Adobe Dimensions (3D extrusion) and Adobe Streamline (advanced tracing). Sold as “Illustrator 5.5 for Power Macintosh” to leverage new PowerPC processors. adobe illustrator-versionshistorie

Introduced Generative Recolor (recolor artwork using natural language prompts – “make it sunset palette”). Intertwine (overlap paths without grouping or layering), Retype (convert static outline text back to editable text via AI font matching), and Contextual Taskbar (AI-suggested next actions). Jumping from “88” to 3

Under new engineering leadership, 7.0 replaced the entire codebase with a cross-platform framework (shared with Photoshop 4.0). It introduced the modern Toolbar layout, Dockable Palettes , Expanded Pen Tool (rubber-band preview), and Pixel Preview (viewing vectors as rasterized pixels). Most critically, it added Live Brushes and pressure-sensitive support for Wacom tablets. This version restored trust and aligned Illustrator for the incoming Adobe/Macromedia rivalry. Phase 3: The Creative Suite Era – Consolidation & Convergence (1999–2012) This version was ported to NeXTSTEP and Silicon

Added 3D and Materials panel (ray-traced 3D extrude/revolve, drag 3D objects, apply materials – via Adobe Dimension tech). Font activation from Adobe Fonts without leaving app. Background saving and Japanese typography enhancements.
